Kristin Mallery

I started seeing images of hearts back in 2003. If I had a camera with me, I would photograph it, and file it away under ‘hearts’. One holiday, I was visiting with some friends. I was excited to use my new laptop’s SLIDESHOW feature. I set it to show all my photos and at some point the ‘hearts’ folder came up. My friends asked “what are we looking at here?” I explained that these were heart images I had collected over the years. They insisted I ‘do something with these’ or they would, they said. I took their advice.

When I returned to my then-home Boston, I printed some 3 x 5s, made up a little photo album and pitched the idea to a restaurant for the the following February. Having never had any formal training, my first attempt was a bit amateur-ish to the restauranteur, but she gave me a shot. The show was a hit and Hearts Happen was born.

I continued to do shows all around the Boston area and got quite a bit of recognition in the press, as well a small following, which extends internationally. (A year later, that same restauranteur hired me to do PR for her restaurant!) I moved [back] to Berlin last year, after hearts 'happened' in my world. I look forward to growing in this community, which, by the way, I am a native of. Today, Hearts Happen products are in stores in Massachusetts, New York, Toronto, Virginia, Delaware, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and right here on the Eastern Shore of Maryland!'
